Uninstall windows messenger Tip!
Windows XP Support
By: WinXpFix.com

Microsoft has tried really hard to prevent you from uninstalling windows messenger. They failed to make it difficult enough because with the directions below you can get rid of messenger very easily.

Navigate to C:windowsinf
Open sysoc.inf
find msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 in the file and take out the word hide so the line would look like msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7
Close the file and save it

Now go to the Add and remove programs applet in the control panel and you will be able to uninstall windows messenger. WinXpFix.com

Make sure to click on the add remove windows components button.
Note: You will be able to uninstall other unneeded programs by removing hide from the sysoc.inf file as well.

No To All Option When Copying Files Tip:

Ever had this happen to you? You're copying files in Windows Explorer, and there's an error (file in use, or something). You take care of the error, and start the copy process over again, but for each of the files that copied properly the first time, you are prompted whether or not you want to replace it. There is a "Yes to All" option, but not a "No to All" option.

Here's the trick: hold down the SHIFT key, and click the No button, and that will tell Windows Explorer "No to All." Talk about an undocumented feature!

Change Windows XP Appearance Tip:

By: WinXpFix.com

You know you can change the look of the Start Menu and Desktop from the new Windows XP look to that of older versions of Windows. Another way that you can roll back the clock is by changing the appearance of the Windows themselves. Try this to see if you like it better:

Right-click an open area of the Desktop, and click Properties. In the Display Properties window that appears, click the Appearance tab. From the "Windows and buttons" drop-down list, choose "Windows Classic Style." Now your Computer can look just like it would with older versions of Windows, such as Windows 2000 or ME.

Change Text to ClearType Tip:

Windows XP can employ a technology called ClearType to smooth the appearance of text on the screen. To switch to this method of rendering text, simply right-click an open area of the Desktop and choose Properties. In the Display Properties window that appears, click the Appearance tab, then click the Effects button. Choose ClearType from the drop-down box under "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts." Click OK and OK to see how it looks.

Change Menu Transition Effect Tip:
Windows XP Support
By: WinXpFix.com

Windows XP, by default, has Menus and Tool Tips fading in and out. However, you can quite easily change this so that they scroll in and out, as you are probably more familiar with older versions of Windows. Simply right-click the Desktop, and choose Properties. In the Display Properties window that appears, click the Appearance tab, and the Effects... button. From the drop-down box under "Use the following transition effect for Menus and Tooltips" choose either the Fade Effect or the Scroll Effect. Click OK and OK to make the change permanent.

Changing Sounds Tip:

By: WinXpFix.com

You don't have to settle for the default sounds that come with Windows. You can change the sounds that are associated with various events such as starting Windows, receiving mail, logging off, etc. Simply open the Control Panel, then open Sounds, "Speech and Audio Devices," then "Sound and Audio Devices." In the Properties window that appears, click the Sounds tab. From there, you can highlight an event, and then choose a sound to be associated with it by clicking the Browse button to find a sound file. You can also choose the drop-down box under Sound Schemes, and choose No Sounds to keep your computer from making those noises altogether.

Easy Way to Open Special Explorer Windows Tip:

Sometimes it just isn't very efficient to click several levels deep into menus and folders. This is why I'm always happy to find a shortcut for things. For instance, in a previous tip, I mentioned that you can use the Windows key (if you have one, it's in the lower left, between the Ctrl and Alt keys) plus R to open the Run command window instead of clicking Start then Run. Well, in that box, you can type the name of some of the folders, and they will automatically open in a Window. For instance, if you type "sendto" the SendTo folder will open. You can type "My Documents" to open that folder. Typing "c:" will open a window at the root of your c: drive. There are many more that work, if you try them - ones with spaces need the quotes around them. Of course, if you type in the whole path, that works every time (but might not be faster than using the mouse).
