Set Permissions for Shared Files and Folders Tip:
Windows XP Support
By: WinXpFix.com

Sharing of files and folders can be managed in two ways. If you chose simplified file sharing, your folders can be shared with everyone on your network or workgroup, or you can make your folders private. (This is how folders are shared in Windows 2000.) However, in Windows XP Professional, you can also set folder permissions for specific users or groups. To do this, you must first change the default setting, which is simple file sharing. To change this setting, follow these steps:

* Open Control Panel, click Tools, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab, and scroll to the bottom of the Advanced Settings list.
* Clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box.

To manage folder permissions, browse to the folder in Windows Explorer, right–click the folder, and then click Properties. Click the Security tab, and assign permissions, such as Full Control, Modify, Read, and/or Write, to specific users. WinXpFix.com

You can set file and folder permissions only on drives formatted to use NTFS, and you must be the owner or have been granted permission to do so by the owner.

Change Internet Search Settings Tip:
Windows XP Support
By: WinXpFix.com

By default, the Windows XP Search Utility will take your query and search the MSN site for results. You can change this default so that a different search engine is the default. To make the switch, open the Windows Search utility by clicking Start -> Search. On the right-hand side, near the bottom of the options under "What do you want to search for," click on Change Preferences. Then click on "Change Internet Search Behavior." You should then see a list of search engines, with MSN highlighted. Highlight (click on) the search engine of your choice, then click OK to make the change.

Change Animated Search Help Tip:

By: WinXpFix.com

A new and perhaps questionable feature of Windows XP is Rover, the animated character that appears whenever you are using the Windows Search (Start -> Search). Rover is just the default, however; you don't have to stick with him. You can choose Merlin, Courtney, or Earl to be your little search helper instead.

To make the switch, open the Windows Search utility by clicking Start -> Search. On the right-hand side, near the bottom of the options under "What do you want to search for," click on Change Preferences. From the options that appear, choose, With a Different Character. Use the Next button to cycle through the available characters, and click OK when you find the one you like.

Lock the Taskbar Tip:
Windows XP Support
By: WinXpFix.com

If you find that your Windows XP Taskbar keeps being changed, or moved to one side or the top of your screen, and you didn't mean to have it do that, this tip is for you. Once you have your Task Bar arranged the way you like it, in the right location on the screen, and with all the right toolbars and icons, you can lock it, so that it won't get changed accidentally. To lock the Taskbar, simply right click it and choose Properties. In the window that appears, check the box (click) next to "Lock the Taskbar." Now you won't accidentally bump the mouse and have your Task bar end up on another side of the screen.

Modify Settings to Improve Performance Tip:

Modify Settings to Improve Performance Tip:
Windows XP Support
By: WinXpFix.com

Windows XP uses processor time to handle system performance according to default settings, which can be adjusted for your computing needs. Also, settings that govern visual effects enhance the appearance of the Windows XP interface, but can slow down performance. You can fine–tune settings in Windows XP Professional to improve performance:

* Right–click My Computer, and then click Properties.
* Click the Advanced tab, and in the Performance area, click Settings.
* On the Visual Effects tab, click the Custom radio button, and then select which UI features to disable to improve performance.
* Click the Advanced tab, and in the Processor scheduling area, click the Background services radio button. Selecting this option means that background tasks that you want to run while you work, such as backup utilities or print jobs, will share processor time equally with programs. WinXpFix.com

You may need to be logged on as an Administrator to make these changes. Note that applying these settings may change your current desktop theme.

Bring Up The Taskbar Tip:

By: WinXpFix.com

One of the consequences of being able to customize the Windows XP interface so much is that it's easy to get loose things. The Taskbar is a good example. One thing that's good to remember is that you can always bring the Taskbar up by pressing Ctrl-Esc. Even if you hide the Taskbar, or move it to a different part of the screen, you will always be able to find it (and the Start button, etc.), by pressing Ctrl and Esc together.

View Network Utilization Tip:

By: WinXpFix.com

You can view the percentage network utilization in the Windows XP Task Manager. Simply open the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl-Shift-Esc, and then click the Networking tab. You should see a real-time graph of network utilization.

Compress Files and Folders in Windows XP Tip:

Running out of room on your hard disk? Need some extra space to install a new program? Don't worry, Windows XP comes to the rescue. Both Windows XP Professional and Home Edition now include a zip compression utility that you can use to compress files and folders on your hard disk. To compress a file or folder:

* Right–click the file or folder.
* Point to Send To.
* Then click Compressed (zipped) Folder.

This will make a compressed folder, identified by a zipper icon, which displays the same name as the file you compressed. You can also make a compressed folder from scratch, by following these steps:

* Right–click the desktop.
* Point to New.
* Click Compressed (zipped) Folder.

Open the new compressed folder and drag files inside that you would like compressed. WinXpFix.com

Automatic Date Insert with Notepad Tip:

By: WinXpFix.com

Notepad is a handy little application that you can use for editing simple text files. It is often used by seasoned computer professionals for quick and easy editing of everything from script files to log files. Here's a tip that can make Notepad even handier. Simply pressing F5 will insert a time and date stamp. This can be a great time-saver when entering comments or when trying to leave an audit trail of changes to a file. You can also find this option on the Edit menu in Notepad.

Change the Look of the Control Panel Tip:
Windows XP Support
By: WinXpFix.com

If you are used to past versions of Windows, you may feel surprised and a little lost when you open the Control Panel in Windows XP. That's because, by default, the Control Panel is now organized into several categories. I'm sure that some market research somewhere told Microsoft that the new arrangement would work better, but I think the old Control Panel is quicker and easier for me. Fortunately, it's easy to make it work just like it used to. First, open the Control Panel from the Start Menu. In the upper left-hand corner, you should see a link called "Switch to classic view." Simply click on that, and you should see the Control Panel organized the way it used to be.

If you change your mind, and want the "new" arrangement back, simply click on the link in the upper left corner that now says "Switch to Category view."

Fix Movie Interference in AVI Files Tip:

By: WinXpFix.com

If you have any old AVI files that you saved in Windows 9x, which have interference when opened in Windows XP, there is an easy fix to get rid of the interference:

* Open Windows Movie Maker.
* Click View and then click Options.
* Click in the box to remove the check mark beside Automatically create clips.

Now, import the movie file that has interference and drag it onto the timeline. Then save the movie, and during the rerendering, the interference will be removed. WinXpFix.com

Choosing a Power Scheme Tip:
Windows XP Support
By: WinXpFix.com

Windows XP offers some power management features that may help reduce your electricity bill, and may also save some wear and tear on your computer equipment. You can specify a length of idle time, after which Windows XP will shut off your monitor, and even shut down (until you need them) your hard drive(s). To view or adjust these settings, open the Control Panel from the Start Menu. Click Performance & Maintenance, then click the Power Options icon.

On the Power Schemes tab, you can choose a setting from the drop-down box that most closely resembles the way that you use your computer, and the settings for turning off the monitor and/or hard drives will be adjusted automatically. You can also adjust the monitor and disk settings on your own, to whatever settings fit your needs best. Remember, these settings are only for when your computer is idle. When you return to use your computer, simply press a key, or move the mouse, and your monitor and hard drives will come back to life!

Hide System Tray Icons Tip:
Windows XP Support
By: WinXpFix.com

The system tray is the small area at one end of the Task Bar (the bar that contains the Start Button) near the clock. It's a really handy area where many programs place their cute little icons, and where you can have some other handy icons display, such as the CPU Usage meter for the Task Manager, the sound icon, network traffic icons, etc. There can also be many less useful icons placed in that area as well. Fortunately, Windows XP gives you some control over which icons display there, so you can choose to only see the ones you deem worthy or useful.

To manage this area, simply right click the Taskbar, and choose Properties. In the Properties window that appears, on the Taskbar tab, check the box next to "Hide Inactive Icons" if it isn't already checked, and then click the "Customize..." button. That will bring up a window that allows you to choose one of three behaviors for each program icon that appears in the system tray: "Hide when inactive," "Always hide," or "always show."
