Microsoft to ship 5.5 mln Xbox unit
Microsoft Corp. expects to ship as many as 5.5 million units of its Xbox 360 video game console worldwide by the end of June 2006, Chairman and co-founder Bill Gates said.
In a speech at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Gates said the company expects between 4.5 million and 5.5 million units of the game console to ship, according to a company statement.
More than 50 Xbox 360 games geared for high-definition TV will be available by the end of June, Gates said.
Gates also previewed the upcoming Urge digital music service. Urge is expected to give users of the Windows Media Player 11 access to more than 2 million songs from major and independent labels, as well as exclusive programing from MTV Networks.
The announcements are part of Microsoft's bid to position itself as the center of home entertainment in a future of digitally connected homes.
The cornerstone of the speech dealt with the company's next-generation Windows Vista operating system, which will include a feature that allows users to plug their digital cable directly into their PCs to watch and record high-definition programing.
Microsoft also said it will work with DIRECTV to enable the transfer of digital content among Windows PCs, DIRECTV devices and the Xbox 360.
